KING ARTHUR
Problem statement
King Arthur likes to give gifts to his men. He has a random amount of knights every time when they meet at his round table. He only brings one gift and selects a person by playing a simple game. The games goes around the table with the first guy in then the next guy is out the guy next to him is in then the guy next to him is out. The last person sitting wins the gift we needed to find the formula that will make you win 100% of the time.

After reading what we had to do I started out by trying to find a pattern in who would win. I made a circle to represent the table and I wrote numbers around it. In, out, in, out, in, out, in, and out I was saying in my head as I crossed them out but I got confused so I had to restart. A few tries after my friends in my table group came up with a different way of figuring out who would stay in and who would be eliminated
We did not find an actual pattern during the class assignment but while taking the test we found that the numbers would go up by two. Lets say you have 146 and the next number is 147 you can not go up by two so it restarts and then goes back up by two. This is one pattern we found during the group test.

What challenged me a lot was the week we started this and ended this I did not have much sleep for a growing boy so I could not focus at all. I think were I grew was asking questions with my group mates because from me not being distracted a lot I missed important things that my group mates Sebastian, Aleks, and Stephen knew and they were very helpful and at the end of that test I understood as much as they did and I was going to write the things we noticed but I ran out of time. the thing I noticed I wrote above right next to the photos. Asking for help in general is hard when I need to ask an adult so I normally don't ask adults other than Mr. Kyle I know him for a long time and I feel comfortable asking him for help. I don't feel like I am able to help others around me when it comes to school work because I have been struggling from the start and my friends I don't think my friends most of what happening. How the group quiz helped me was I understand the problem better now because my table mates helped me to understand this. I have troubles grading myself because I don't know what is needed to meet a C or a B even an A .
COW
PROBLEM
Question: A cow is tied to a the rope the rope is 100 feet long and tied to a barn. the barn is 10' by 10'. what is the total area of the space in which the cow may graze?
Reflection
Everything that happened I believe in 5 weeks pushed my thinking everything that happened was new to me. what I will be keeping in my brain for a while is how to calculate triangle sides because I practiced that a lot. the group test quiz affected my learning I feel in a positive way because I did not want to let down my team so I took a lot of notes and even though the notes did not really go with the main cow problem it helped me to practice out of school. If I were to grade myself on this unit the grade I would give myself is a C because I learned how to find the angles, missing side lengths like the base and height but I don't know how to complete it by finding the part the cow can graze in and I know it will be a simple thing to learn.
Maximum
Rectangle
In the start we all did what we thought was right. X=3 Y=7 I thought that was the largest but no it was not we could go further and we were about to find out how!
|
In the Maximum Rectangle problem we had to figure out what is the biggest rectangle we can fit in a parabola. The cool thing about this problem is we can do this for our entire life and never get the biggest possible Rectangle.
P=2x+2(16 -x2)
A=X(16-x^2) Perimeter explanation- To solve for the perimeter my group and I plugged in points for X so we can solve for Y and this is how we ended up with our maximum Perimeter.

Test
My group was Sebas, Aleks, and Stephen I don't believe we actually went to tutoring to prepare for this test we just used the time inside of class because we did not have time to do it because we were preparing for our exhibition inside and outside school hours because we had so much work with it was worth a good amount of points.
During the test I feel we did horrible because I remember Sebas being ahead Stephen being kind of behind, Aleks being behind Stephen, and me being lost completely with what place we were at. I feel it could of went way better but we got a ok grade on it this experience was not the best group work I've seen but not the worst either. We all tried to help out. On the individual test I felt pretty good on it I thought I would get 100% on that but I did not which is a problem because that means I don't know where I went wrong and I also I don't know where my test went
What pushed my thinking in this problem we explored was trying to figure out what is the biggest rectangle that can fit in the parabola. This was tedious and easy to forget a step and get the wrong answer on I know I did do that because we had to repeat the same process of testing a minimum of 3 numbers to see which is the highest. If I were to grade myself I would give myself 80/100 or 85/100 because one of those are the points I got on the test for this lessons.
MATH III
The Growth mindset project
In the start we had two weeks to learn anything we wanted to so I decided to learn how to play the piano. I sadly chose a really hard song to learn so on the second week I asked Mr, B if I can learn how to make bread instead and he said sure. After a week with some burnt and weird looking bread I was able to make 2 baguettes. I am sure people did change their mind of growth mindset but I thought it was possible to learn anything you want if you give enough effort. After the two weeks of trying to learn something I did continue with my skill I learned to make more bread because I like how bread smells like. I feel like the growth mindset project was a good starting project because math can be hard and you feel like giving up because it's impossible or something like that but learning that nothing is impossible to learn probably did help students push harder to learn.
A problem I enjoyed this year was the King Arthur Problem
Here is the problem statement
King Arthur likes to give gifts to his men. He has a random amount of knights every time when they meet at his round table. He only brings one gift and selects a person by playing a simple game. The games goes around the table with the first guy in then the next guy is out the guy next to him is in then the guy next to him is out. The last person sitting wins the gift we needed to find the formula that will make you win 100% of the time.

I liked this problem a lot because if I would not have done this for math I would of thought it was 100% random. My favorite thing about this was when everyone understood the problem and could do it we went outside with our chairs and stools and tested it on the green field instead of just in the class room. The best part about this was that the "boysnighout" group won most of the matches that happened. Also if you are wondering who the boys are it is Brandon, Stephen, Anthony, Sergio, Sebastian, and Aleks
A problem I struggled with was the Cow Problem
This was the description of the problem "A cow is tied to a the rope the rope is 100 feet long and tied to a barn. the barn is 10' by 10'. what is the total area of the space in which the cow may graze?"
This was a struggle because I would keep on getting confused on the rope getting smaller by 10 feet. I understood that it got smaller by 10' but then my brain would forget or ignore that part and it would mess me up. After a few days of forgetting and then remembering this became easy and fun then we had to find the area of the weird circle and that was an even bigger struggle.
How I have grown this year
Content, internship, math final, personal relationships, etc.
Every year in math class is different not because we learn something new but because math has a random collection of people from both teams and the team is just random in itself. I like this because in my regular classes like Biology and Humanities they are the same people and this year I have no friends in my classes other than in math. So it's a great way to start off the morning because it's easy to ask a friend for help if you need help or for anything really. You're reading this to know how I have grown. How I have grown this year is in maturity I was told 11th grade was hard but I didn't realize how hard it would be. I complained a lot first semester about almost everything because it was hard but it was hard because there was a lot to do but it was hard because there was a regular amount of things to do but it was more challenging because everything was new to me and felt like a lot but nearing the end I just kind of stopped and I think I just got a mental callus to it because the amount of work stayed the same.

Pre-algebra Or Calculus?
This school year we got to choose what class we want to to take next year so I chose pre-algebra. I heard that calculus is just algebra with more things to it. Knowing this I thought it would be best to take pre-algebra because I don't feel confidant in my knowledge of algebra to know if I'll make it through calculus.
How do I plan on being successful next year in math?
How I plan to be successful next year in math class is by going to tutoring and doing Khan Academy when ever I need to know something. It sounds like this math class will be less broad than the other math classes that were in the past so that means I only need to perfect one skill or only a few skills and then once I have perfected it we all perfect it some more. This seems good for me because now I will remember how to do algebra because we normally go really fast on subjects to were I barely get the hang of things and then swoosh we are on to the next thing and I forget how to do what I just learned.
